33 Quotes That Helped Save My Life

I call 2012, “The Year I Slept Away.”

I’m not kidding. I slept more in that year than ever before. I can hardly remember anything that happened that year. If not for the fact that I had to wake up to go to my much-loathed jobs (cocktail waitress and cashier), since I desired to eat and pay rent, I would have chosen to remain unconscious the entire time. And that is what I wanted. You see I had just gotten my Master’s degree a few years back yet in 2012 I was jobless, penniless, husband-less, purposeless, Godless – my entire mindset was one of LESS. I was so sad and so bloody depressed that I honestly wanted to die.

It might sound dramatic for some, but for a her-own-worst-critic Nigerian girl, who was dependent on her comfort-zone and on her “socially-approved success plan” that wasn’t panning out, death seemed better than life. I was hosting daily pity-parties for myself every morning I woke up. I thank God for giving me a few saving graces that kept me waking up each day: My family (their love, presence, and encouragement was a tremendous gift for me; more than I even realized at the time), my blog/screenwriting (yes, coming here helped me focus on what I liked to do), films/YouTube videos, and quotes.  I want to share with you some of the quotes that helped me (and some I’ve learned since then) hold on to hope amidst the despair and pushed me to physically get up and make the choice to not just exist, but live greatly. I hope they can also help those of you that are feeling down and out in life to get up, get aligned with God again, and choose to live greatly/grow in your God-given purpose.

  1. Thank you for sharing this post, and I'm glad you're in a much better place now. My favourite is: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”– John 14:27
I have it up on my bedroom wall :)

    1. Thank you Vegan!

I love the quote you chose very much because I value God's peace now more than anything in this world. With the hustle and bustle culture we live in filled with stress and worry, peace is a luxury I am aware I need and am mindful to choose every day.

  2. I love number seven. I've written it on our fridge. We have alphabet magnets, I didn't just vandalise the fridge.

    2. Thank you for sharing Sarah:)

I became familiar with Thich Nhat Hanh recently and I really love his spiritual teachings on peace, humility, and compassion. I was very set in my ways before and thought I knew it all so this quote reminds me that there is always more for me to learn.

And if you had vandalized your fridge, at least it would have been for worthy words!:)

  4. What a powerful list of quotes. I particularly like number eight. There is truth in "try, try, try again" It can be very easy to feel low and not bother trying to pick yourself up, but one must will themselves to succeed in life :)

    1. Thank you for your comment Lucy!

There are so many times when a person might feel like throwing in the towel and I 100% believe coming across words like these can give a person the push they need to take the next step.

I particularly like the Thomas Edison quote because I read that he tried at least 1,000 times before he successfully invented the light bulb. 1,000 times! Such effort is not necessarily applauded now. Stories of commitment like his are necessary for young women to hear and imitate for their own personal journey of growth.
